Austrian actor Helmut Berger, who was born on May 29, 1944, and died on May 18, 2023, was well-known for his portrayals of egotistical and sexually ambiguous characters. He is regarded as a pop idol from that time period as well as a sex icon. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was one of the major figures in European cinema.
Among his most well-known collaborations with Luchino Visconti are his portrayal of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in Ludwig, for which he received a special David di Donatello award, and his performance in The Damned, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
In 1964, he made his first acquaintance with Luchino Visconti. He played the immoral Martin von Essenbeck in Visconti’s The Damned after receiving his first acting part from the director in the sequence “La Strega Bruciata Viva” from the 1967 film Le streghe (The Witches). He impersonates Marlene Dietrich from the 1930 classic The Blue Angel in what may be his most well-known sequence. The major role in the Dorian Gray adaptation and the title character in the 1970 Oscar-winning Italian drama The Garden of the Finzi-Continis followed.
