English musician Andrew Michael Rourke, who was born on January 17, 1964, is best known for playing bass for the Smiths. He is renowned for his melodious bass-playing style. In Manchester, Lancashire, England, Rourke was born. His mother was English, while his father was Irish. At age seven, he acquired an acoustic guitar from his parents.
Marr and Morrissey later merged to form the Smiths. Rourke joined the group after its debut performance and stayed for the majority of its lifespan. He was fired from the group in the beginning of 1986 due to his heroin addiction, but he returned two weeks later, right before they released their third studio album, The Queen Is Dead. Mike Joyce, a drummer, and Rourke sued Morrissey and Marr for unpaid royalties.
Shortly after their relationship ended, Rourke and Joyce worked on music with Sinéad O’Connor; Rourke may be heard on the 1990 single I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. Rourke and bassists Mani and Peter Hook co-founded Freebass in 2007. Up until August 2010, he continued to play with the group.
