A 26-year-old inmate died at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California, on April 27, after drinking an excessive amount of water. According to officials, the unidentified inmate was seen drinking a “profuse amount of water” and vomiting. He was assigned to the jail’s Restrictive Housing Unit due to his extensive assaultive history on staff and was the only inmate in his cell at the time of the incident.
After vomiting, the prisoner was taken to a medical outpatient housing unit, where he told staff that he had used a controlled substance the day before his arrest. At 3:25 p.m. on April 27, a deputy checked on him and found the inmate unresponsive. Despite paramedics’ life-saving efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m.
The cause of the inmate’s death is actively being investigated by the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau. The inmate’s family, who are Mexican, have yet to be reached by authorities, and there are no additional details at this time.
