Queen Selyse was the spouse of Stannis Baratheon, the Lord of Dragonstone and the prospective heir to the Iron Throne. She was a member of the illustrious House Florent of Brightwater Keep, a bannerman for House Tyrell when she was born.
Princess Shireen Baratheon is the couple’s lone child; she is a weak but intelligent daughter. The other members of Selyse and Stannis’ family, Petyr, Tommard, and Edric, all passed away at birth. Her cells are packed with chemical canisters where she keeps their corpses submerged.
Together with her husband, the King, Queen Selyse is present and watching the ritual burning of the Seven statues on the shores of Dragonstone. As Stannis removes the blazing Lightbringer from one of the statues, she and the other followers of the Lord of Light fall to their knees. After the ceremony, Stannis extends his hand to Selyse and she rises to follow him.
Melisandre claims that Selyse has not given birth to a son, only stillborn boys and that Selyse is regularly confined to her tower at Dragonstone due to illness. Later, Stannis brings up the siege of Storm’s End during Robert’s Rebellion and how his wife Selyse was in danger of dying if Ser Davos Seaworth hadn’t been able to break through the defences and bring in supplies.
Why can’t Selyse Baratheon have a male child in ‘Game of Thrones’?
Selyse Baratheon is unable to have male children as a result of this curse.
