When Carolyn Bryant Donham, a white lady, was 21 years old and living in Mississippi, she accused black teen Emmett Till of wolf-whistling at her and making approaches, which resulted in one of the most well-known lynchings in history.

In 1934, Donham was born. According to a death report filed with the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office, she passed away on April 25, 2023, in Westlake, Louisiana, while receiving hospice care.

Before she passed away, Donham was contentedly residing in Louisiana.

The Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office said that she was receiving hospice treatment for an unidentified malignancy.

After decades of efforts by Till’s kin to prosecute her, she finally died.

While Donham’s husband was accused of killing Till and found not guilty, she was never arrested.

The injustice generated widespread media coverage and stoked the civil rights movement. Rosa Parks boarded a public bus in Montgomery four days after hearing a discussion about Emmett Till and sat down in protest. Later, she claimed that she had been thinking about Till the entire time.

Donham had long maintained her innocence in Till’s murder, and she made the same claim in her unpublished memoir “I Am More Than a Wolf Whistle,” but civil rights groups and others have asked for her to be put on trial, alleging that she gave the murderers’ identities to them.
