With the news that adored actor Ron Faber, best known for a brief but unforgettable appearance in The Exorcist, has passed away, the performing community is in deep mourning.
The actor passed away from lung cancer on March 26 at the age of 90; his passing was only reported.
In a Facebook post last week, the actor’s lifelong buddy, actor David Patrick Kelly, shared the sad news of his passing.
I first met Ron Faber while I worked as a dishwasher/sub-bartender at the Mercer Arts Center, Kelly said.
As a founding member of Joe Chaikin’s Open Theatre, which had a significant impact on both me and a lot of other people, he called Faber “one of the true knights of American avant theatre.”
Faber was referred to as a “great artist and gentleman with a wonderful voice and laugh” by Kelly as well.
Faber, who was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in February 1933, made his stage debut at the Marquette Players Theatre in The Scarecrow in 1954.
He caught the attention of filmmaker William Friedkin after winning an Obie Award for his performance in And They Put Handcuffs on Flowers, which led to his casting in The Exorcist, his first feature film.
He portrayed Chuck, an assistant director on the movie-within-a-movie called Crash Course, which features Chris MacNeil, played by Ellen Burstyn.
Chuck is the one who shows up at Chris’ residence to break the heartbreaking news that Burke Dennings, the director of Crash Course (Jack MacGowran), has been found dead.
