Dick Fosbury, the Olympic high jump champion who revolutionized the event with a radically different jumping method that was subsequently named after him, died at the age of 76.
At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Fosbury won gold in the high jump by jumping back first to clear the bar, a technique that has since been dubbed the “Fosbury Flop” and is employed by all high jumpers today.
Dick Fosbury’s funeral, burial service, pictures, date, time, venue
Since the Olympic high jump Champion just passed away, it is obviously too early to know about his funeral arrangements and burial details. However, it will be updated as soon as his family discusses it and disclose it to the public.
According to his publicist, Ray Schulte, Fosbury died on Sunday following a return of cancer.
Prior to Fosbury, many high jumpers cleared their heights by sprinting parallel to the bar, then leaping over with a straddle kick and landing with their faces pointed downward.
Fosbury lifted off at an angle, leaped backward, bent himself into a “J” form to launch his 6-foot-4 bulk over the bar, then plunged headfirst into the landing pit at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
