Rabbi Eugene Kohn, an American Reconstructionist, was born on January 26, 1887, and he died on April 1, 1977. He also published, edited, and wrote.
After growing up in Newark, New Jersey, he went to the Jewish Theological Institute of America and was ordained in 1912. He met Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan there, who trained him in homiletics. He was a congregational rabbi in Conservative synagogues in the US states of Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, and Wisconsin from 1912 to 1939. From 1936 to 1937, he served as the Rabbinical Assembly’s president.
Eugene Kohn was instrumental in the rebuilding process. The Modern Haggadah (1941), The Sabbath Prayer Book (1945), and The Reconstructionist Prayer Book were all edited by Eugene Kohn in collaboration with Kaplan and Ira Eisenstein (1948).
Eugene Kohn was among Kaplan’s most significant students, along with Milton Steinberg, Jack Cohen, and Eisenstein.
