Hans Sven Poulsen, originally Bruce Gordon Poulsen, was a well-known Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was of Danish descent. He was born on March 7, 1945, and during the late 1960s and early 1970s, he rose to recognition for his distinctive hippy style. Poulsen was born in Melbourne, Australia. Vic and Nellie Poulsen’s lap-steel guitar and ukulele techniques spanned a variety of musical genres, including folk, country & western, Hawaiian, and bush ballads.
With “Jamie/Rose Colored Glasses” for Johnny Farnham and “Monty and Me” for Zoot, in addition to his singles “Boom Sha La La Lo” and “Light Over the Valley,” Poulsen found fame as a songwriter (both in 1970).
Poulsen established the first iteration of the Melbourne group 18th Century Quartet in 1965. They played original music and performed in a style that would later be referred to as world music (mostly composed by Poulsen). The use of a range of acoustic instruments by the group set it apart from most of its contemporaries, including the mandolin, autoharp, and bouzouki. The sound would be more pop-oriented in the second iteration.
After beginning a solo career in 1967, Poulsen scored two Australian pop records with the songs “Boom Sha La La Lo” (1970) and “Light Over the Valley.”
