Uecker, who was born in Milwaukee on January 26, 1935, grew up watching the minor league Milwaukee Brewers play at Borchert Field and wanted to play baseball professionally. Uecker was signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1956, and in 1962, he made his major level catching debut. After spells with the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals, where he won the World Series in 1964, Uecker went to the Atlanta Braves, where he played until his playing career ended in 1967.
