Anohni requested accompanying musicians to record several songs she penned in the early 1990s after receiving a grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts for the 1996 production of “The Birth of Anne Frank/The Ascension of Marsha P. Johnson” at Performance Space 122.
At The Kitchen, the group gave their debut performance as “Antony and the Johnsons” in 1997 as a component of William Basinski’s piece “Life on Mars.” The ensemble started to perform more frequently in 1999 at places in New York City such as Joe’s Pub and The Knitting Factory.
After hearing the tape, British experimental musician David Tibet of Current 93 offered to distribute it via his Durtro record label; the debut album, Antony and the Johnsons was released in 2000.

In England’s Chichester, Anohni was born. In 1981, her family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. She relocated to Manhattan, New York, in 1990 to attend the Experimental Theater Wing at New York University. In 1992, she and Johanna Constantine created the performance art collaborative Blacklips.
