Anohni relocated to Manhattan in 1990 to enroll at New York University’s Experimental Theatre Wing. Together with her creative partner Johanna Constantine, she founded the performance group Blacklips in 1992, later changing its name to Blacklips Performance Cult.
Over the ensuing years, she performed late-night theatre, wrote late-night plays, and sang in bars and clubs using pre-recorded cassettes as her accompaniment.
Does Anohni still perform?
Anohni organized an exhibition named “LOVE” in April 2019 at The Kitchen in New York City. Regarding the exhibit, she stated in the program, “There is a great deal of uncertainty about the future. Can we organize our need to sever nature’s throat? What Is Happening is a question I frequently ask myself.
The institutions that support my own modern life have been infected by the same disease that is destroying the ecosystem, and a bloom of hopelessness has appeared inside of me. In my mind, holding room for the disappearance of individuals, groups, and biodiversity involves opening up spectral time and simultaneously leaking all points “.
To coincide with the occasion, Anohni published a book of photographs by Julia Yasuda’s wife, Erika Yasuda, as a tribute to her longtime colleague.
In addition, Anohni produced the play “She Who Saw Beautiful Things,” which included Charles Atlas, Lorraine O’Grady, Connie Flemming, Laurie Anderson, and others in supporting roles.
