American singer, pianist, and composer Karen Lee Orzolek was born in South Korea on November 22, 1978. For the unsigned rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, she performs lead vocals.

She was born in Seoul, South Korea, the daughter of a Polish father and a Korean mother. The family later moved to Englewood, New Jersey, where she was raised and attended the Dwight-Englewood School and The Elisabeth Morrow School to finish her schooling.

She remarked of her upbringing, “It’s almost embarrassing how well-behaved I was as a child, which is perhaps why I do things like spew water on myself on stage as an adult.”

Prior to enrolling at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, she attended Oberlin College.
