Simon “Mahlathini” Nkabinde, a South African mbaqanga singer, lived from 1937 or 1938 till July 27, 1999. As the renowned exponent of the deep-voiced, basso profundo “groaning” style that came to represent mbaqanga music in the 1960s, Nkabinde is known as the “Lion of Soweto.” The Mahotella Queens and the supporting Makgona Tsohle Band recorded and performed with Nkabinde from 1964 to 1971, and then again from 1983 until 1999. Nkabinde was also a very active live performer in South Africa. Paul Simon’s 1986 Graceland album helped launch the Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens performance into global success.
