Initially, PJ Harvey was used to referring to both Harvey and the band she created with the drummer Robert Ellis and the bassist Stephen Vaughan. Rid of Me, Harvey’s most challenging record, was produced in 1993 under Steve Albini’s engineering supervision (whose reputation as a sonic extremist was built on his bands, Big Black and Shellac, as well as his production of groups like the Pixies and Nirvana).

The single “Down by the Water” from PJ Harvey’s 1995 album To Bring You, My Love, is her biggest hit. The song received a nomination for Best Rock Song at the 1996 Grammy Awards and reached at number 33 on the UK Singles Chart.
Throughout her career, Polly Jean Harvey has received two prestigious honors: the NME Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music by the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Mercury Prize 2001 for Stories from the City, and Stories from the Sea (2011).
