On July 26, 1941, Darlene Wright, better known by her stage name Darlene Love, was born in the US. She recorded both by herself and as the Blossoms’ main vocalist.
The lead singer for the band Honey Cone is her younger sister Edna Wright. She spent the majority of her formative years in Los Angeles, albeit briefly living in Texas. She was a devoted member of her church and had grown up listening to gospel music as the daughter of a preacher.
In Hawthorne, California, Wright joined the neighborhood church choir when she was ten years old. Cora Martin-Moore, the choir’s director, noticed her as they were rehearsing.
She was asked to go to the Music Mart after giving a performance for Martin-Moore, where she sang and made numerous broadcasts.
Darlene Love siblings: Meet Edna Wright
Edna Wright is Darlene’s only sibling we recorded.
She is an American singer born on February 2, 1945, and is best known as the lead singer of Honey Cone, the girl group whose song “Want Ads” topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971.
Los Angeles native Edna Wright grew up singing in the church. Bishop J.W. Wright, her father, served as the pastor of King’s Holiness Chapel in Los Angeles.
She started performing in the gospel group The COGIC (Church of God in Christ) Singers in 1960.
Wright first connected with producer Phil Spector through her older sister, Darlene Love. In 1964, a friend of Spector’s named Jack Nitzsche produced her debut studio album.
Wright performed the main vocals on “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby” by Hale and the Hushabyes, a group that also featured Brian Wilson, Sonny & Cher, and Jackie DeShannon.
Her first solo song, “A Touch of Venus,” which she recorded on Champion Records under the stage name Sandy Wynns, sparked a tour of nightclubs around the country.
