John Lennon, the father of the Beatles, made Mitchell a target because of his preference for a more sophisticated culture.
During their brief encounter, Mitchell and Lennon were traveling in separate directions: Mitchell was working on one of her best works, Court and Spark, and Lennon was imbibing heavily with Harry Nilsson during his “Lost Weekend.”
After the publication of Court and Spark, Mitchell and Lennon ran into one other once again in an interview with Maclean’s Magazine in 2014.
Evidently, Lennon included his perspective as a “Working Class Hero” in his assessment of the record and Mitchell herself.
What did John Lennon say about Joni Mitchell and why did he hate her?
Mitchell added, “I watched this [English film], which was a compilation of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. “The intelligence of it significantly declined after it reached my era.
This man added, “I never liked Joni Mitchell—to she’s twee,” as he crossed his feet and folded his arms when it came to me. That’s how John Lennon was, after all. It was that dread of middle-class people that the working class has.
