Hill appeared in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). She later co-founded the Fugees with Pras Michel and his cousin Wyclef Jean. The Score (1996), which spawned the breakthrough single “Killing Me Softly” with Hill on lead vocals, was the group’s second album.

It earned her the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, becoming her the first woman to do so. Hill later worked with Nas on “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)” and wrote “A Rose Is Still a Rose” for Aretha Franklin. Her rocky relationship with Jean caused the band to split in 1997, and she quickly began working on her solo record.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Hill’s sole solo studio album, was released to critical acclaim. The tracks “Ex-Factor” and “Lost Ones” are included. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with the biggest first-week sales for a female debut album in the twentieth century.

The first single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to do so with their initial entries on both the Billboard 200 and the Hot 100, as well as the first female rapper to do so on both charts.

Hill made a record for the most nominations for a woman in one night at the 41st Grammy Awards, with 10; she also won five awards, including Album of the Year, making her the first hip-hop artist to do so.

It was eventually added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. She eventually dropped out of the public spotlight, disenchanted with the music industry and suffering from fame’s pressures. Hill’s new-material live album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 was certified platinum by the RIAA in 2002.

Hill’s future activities have included festival appearances and the release of songs on a regular basis. Billboard placed Hill sixth on their “10 Best Rappers of All Time” list in 2015, making her the only woman on the list.
