Between December 25, 1907, and November 18, 1994, Cabell Calloway III was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, conductor, and dancer.

He had ties to the Cotton Club in Harlem, where he frequently performed and gained notoriety as a vocalist during the swing era. He received accolades for his expertise in combining jazz and vaudeville during the course of a career that spanned more than 65 years.

One of the most renowned dance orchestras in the United States was led by Calloway, a maestro of exuberant scat singing, from the early 1930s until the late 1940s.

The band included trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Jonah Jones, and Adolphus “Doc” Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon “Chu” Berry, guitarist Danny Barker, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Cozy Cole.
