Mark William Lanegan (November 25, 1964 – February 22, 2022) was a singer, songwriter, and poet from the United States. He rose to prominence as the main singer of the early grunge band Screaming Trees, and he also played in Queens of the Stone Age and The Gutter Twins.

He recorded 12 solo studio albums, three with Isobel Campbell, and two with Duke Garwood. His baritone voice was characterized as “as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as soft and pliable as moccasin leather,” and he has been compared to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave.

Lanegan’s musical career began in 1984 with Screaming Trees, with whom he released seven studio albums and five EPs before the band disbanded in 2000. During his time with the band, he also began a solo career, releasing The Winding Sheet, his first solo studio album, in 1990.

He went on to create ten more solo albums, all of which gained critical acclaim but only moderate financial success. Following the dissolution of Screaming Trees, he became a frequent contributor to Queens of the Stone Age, and was a full-time member from 2001 to 2005, during the Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies to Paralyze phases.

Throughout his career, Lanegan collaborated with a variety of musicians. He and Kurt Cobain recorded an album of Lead Belly covers in the 1990s, but it was never published. He also played in the band Mad Season with Layne Staley and Mike McCready and established the alternative rock band The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli in 2003, as well as contributing to albums by Moby, Bomb the Bass, Soulsavers, Tinariwen, The Twilight Singers, Manic Street Preachers, and Unkle.

Lanegan had fought drug and alcohol addiction throughout his life, although he had been sober for over a decade at the time of his death. In 2020, he released his memoir Sing Backwards and Weep, inspired by his friend Anthony Bourdain. In 2021, he released the memoir Devil in a Coma, which focused on his near-death experience with COVID-19.

He and his wife Shelley Brien departed the United States in 2020 and moved to Killarney, Ireland, where he died two years later at the age of 57. The reason for death was not disclosed.
