After completing his formal education in Victoria, Molan enlisted in the Australian Army.
He joined the Royal Australian Infantry Corps in 1971 after receiving his degree from the Royal Military College, Duntroon.
He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of New South Wales as well as his Bachelor of Economics from the University of Queensland. He completed his studies in Indonesian at the ADF School of Languages.
He kept up his passion for flying and had both instrument and fixed-wing commercial pilot’s licenses. Additionally, he held the title of Master Project Director and was a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD) (MPD).

Three daughters and a son were born to Molan and Anne after their marriage. Erin Molan, one of their daughters, is a media figure who hosted the rugby league television show The Footy Show.
Molan announced on April 5, 2021, that he had been diagnosed with cancer that was aggressive and that he would be taking time off from the Senate to receive more tests and treatment.
At the age of 72, Molan passed away on January 16, 2023.
