Patti Smith and her sister relocated to Paris in 1969, where she started busking and performing. When Smith returned to Manhattan, he and Mapplethorpe lived in the Hotel Chelsea and frequently visited Max’s Kansas City.
Smith provided the spoken word soundtrack for Sandy Daley’s art film Robert Having His Nipple Pierced, which stars Mapplethorpe. In the same year, Smith appeared with Wayne County in Jackie Curtis’ play Femme Fatale.
Later, she portrayed the main character in Tony Ingrassia’s play Island. As a member of the St. Mark’s Poems Project, she spent the first part of the 1970s producing art, writing poetry, and doing performances.
On February 10, 1971, Lenny Kaye gave her first public reading of poetry at St. Mark’s Church in the Bowery as the opening act for Gerard Malanga. Later that year, she and Sam Shepard co-wrote the play Cowboy Mouth, in which she appeared for one night only.
