Christine Ellen Hynde is a musician from the United States. The Pretenders’ lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter Chris Hynde is one of the band’s two remaining original members, along with drummer Martin Chambers.

Hynde developed an interest in hippie culture, Eastern mysticism, and vegetarianism. Hynde joined Sat. Sun. Mat., a band that included Mark Mothersbaugh, later of Devo, while attending Kent State University’s Art School for three years. Hynde was also involved in the Kent State massacre on May 4, 1970, in which one of her friends’ boyfriend was among the four victims.

In 1978, Hynde , Pete Farndon, James Honeyman-Scott, and Chambers formed the Pretenders in Hereford, England. She has also collaborated on songs with Frank Sinatra, Cher, and UB40. In 2014, Hynde released her debut solo album, Stockholm. Hynde was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the Pretenders.
