La India is a Puerto Rican singer-songwriter who specializes in salsa, house music, and Latin pop. Caballero was born in the Puerto Rican town of Ro Piedras. Her parents relocated to New York City shortly after her birth, settling in the city’s South Bronx. They first lived with Caballero’s grandmother, a woman who had a significant influence on Caballero’s life.

La India began singing as a child and even studied opera for a short time. La India’s grandmother gave her the stage name La India because of her dark features and long, straight black hair. La India considers herself a feminist after witnessing her father abuse her mother while she hid under the bed.

La India performed in the musical production Selena VIVE!, a tribute to the late Tejano sensation Selena Quintanilla-Perez, in 2005. La India released the album Soy Diferente in 2006, which included two award-winning hits.

La India received Best Tropical Album of the Year Female for “Soy Diferente” (I Am Different) and Latin Dance Club Play Track of the Year for “Solamente Una Noche” at the 2007 Annual Latin Billboard Awards (Just for One Night). In 2007, La India recorded a duet titled “90 Millas” with Latin sensation Gloria Estefan.
