Lewis Allan Reed, born March 2, 1942, was a musician, composer, and poet from the United States. He was the guitarist, singer, and primary songwriter for the rock band Velvet Underground and had a five-decade solo career.
Despite not being commercially successful at the time, the Velvet Underground went on to become one of the most influential bands in the history of underground and alternative rock music.
Reed went to Freeport Junior High School after attending Atkinson Elementary School. Merrill, born Margaret Reed, his sister, reported that as an adolescent, he endured panic episodes, grew socially awkward, and “possessed a fragile disposition,” although he was intensely concentrated on what he liked, primarily music.
He had an early interest in rock & roll and rhythm and blues after learning to play the guitar from the radio, and he played in various bands during high school. At the age of 16, he began experimenting with narcotics. Reed also suffered from dyslexia.
