Gladys Knight & the Pips was an American R&B, soul, and funk family music group from Atlanta, Georgia, that was prominent on the music charts and on the performance circuit for almost three decades, beginning in the early 1950s.
Gladys Knight, brother Merald “Bubba” Knight, sister Brenda Knight, and cousins Eleanor Guest and William Guest formed The Pips in 1952, taking their name from a cousin’s nickname.
After a few years of appearing on talent programs, the trio signed with Brunswick Records in 1957 and released a couple of singles that did not chart. Brenda Knight and Eleanor Guest departed the ensemble in 1959 and were replaced by another cousin, Edward Patten, and a non-relative, Langston George.
