Gladys Maria Knight dubbed the “Empress of Soul,” was born in Los Angeles, California on May 28, 1944. Gladys Knight & the Pips, which included her brother Merald “Bubba” Knight and cousins William Guest and Edward Patten, recorded singles in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

She has a deceased brother, David, a live brother, Merald “Bubba” Jr., and an older sister, Brenda. She sang in the church choir throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was eight years old when she won Ted Mack’s The Original Amateur Hour TV show competition in 1952.

Gladys, her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda, and their cousins Eleanor and William Guest began playing together after a record player broke down during Bubba’s ninth birthday celebration the same year. Gladys’ mother, Elizabeth Knight, continued pushing the quintet to create a band.
