Reginald Cooray, born on November 12, 1947, was a Sri Lankan politician and teacher. He served as the Northern Province’s chief minister, government minister, and governor. In April 2018, he served as Governor of the Central Province for less than 24 hours, making it the shortest Governorship in Sri Lankan history.
He was a wealthy landowner and a Roman Catholic. Cooray’s wife passed away in July 2011. In December 2013, his daughter Muditha Sanjeewani died.
Cooray worked as an English instructor. He began his political career with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). He ran as an independent candidate in the 1977 Beruwala parliamentary election but was defeated. He eventually became a member of Vijaya Kumaratunga’s Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP).

According to a News 1st correspondent, the event was meant to choose candidates for the Local Government Election, and he suffered a heart attack while there.
On Thursday (12) night, he was admitted to the hospital and subsequently transferred to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital for treatment, where he died early Friday (13) morning, according to his relatives.
