Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert, better known by his stage name Toots Hibbert, was a Jamaican musician and songwriter who served as the lead vocalist for the reggae and ska group Toots and the Maytals from 8 December 1942 to 11 September 2020.
He was a reggae pioneer who performed for six decades and contributed to establishing some of the foundational elements of the genre. The song “Do the Reggay” by Hibbert from 1968 is frequently cited as the inspiration for the term “reggae.”
