Charles White, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, passed away from cancer yesterday (Wednesday, January 11) in Newport Beach, California.
White was a tailback for USC who won the Heisman Trophy in 1979 and was a part of the national championship team that won the 1978 season. He was 64 years old.
White was USC’s third Heisman Trophy winner and currently holds the school record for career running yards (6,245 yards, which was the second-highest total in NCAA history at the time) along with 49 touchdowns.
He was a 4-year letterwinner for USC (1976–77–78–79) and a two-time unanimous All-American (1978–79), and he set 22 NCAA, Pac–10, USC, and Rose Bowl records. He led the country in running in 1979 and captained the Trojans.
He also received the Pop Warner, Maxwell, and Walter Camp Awards in 1979 as a senior.
Besides his children Nicole White, Julian White, Tara White, Ashton White, Sophia White, and granddaughter Giovanna Hemmen, White is also survived by his ex-wife Judianne White-Basch.
