Dorothy Tristan, a model, scriptwriter, and actress best known for her parts in “Klute,” “The Looking Glass,” and “Scarecrow,” passed away at her northwest Indiana home (where she had lived for 48 years) after a more than ten-year battle with Alzheimer’s, her husband, director John D. Hancock, revealed on Facebook. She lived for 88 years.

In 2015’s independent drama “The Looking Glass”, Tristan cowrote the script and played the lead. After decades away from performing, she returned for the movie. She portrayed a woman taking care of her problematic 13-year-old granddaughter while experiencing dementia symptoms. The movie, which took place in their longtime residence in La Porte County, Indiana, was directed by her husband.

Tristan found it difficult to recollect the dialogue she had written, but she improvised and utilized cue cards to do so.

Tristan was born on May 9, 1934, and was raised in Manhattan’s Yorkville neighborhood. She went to Washington Irving High School and the School of Industrial Arts in New York.

She was first a model who visited Europe and appeared on the pages of Life and Vogue.
