Justin Gabriel Hurwitz born January 22, 1985, is a film composer and television writer from the United States. He is most known for his long-running association with filmmaker Damien Chazelle, having scored each of his films: Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, Whiplash, La La Land, First Man, and Babylon.

Hurwitz was born in California, the son of Gail, a professional ballet dancer turned registered nurse, and writer Ken Hurwitz. He is of Jewish descent (from Russia, Poland, Damascus in Syria, and Beirut in Lebanon).

In 1998, his family relocated to Wisconsin, where he attended Nicolet High School.  Hurwitz went to Harvard University, where he shared a dorm with director Damien Chazelle.

They worked together on a student film, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, which was released in 2009. Hurwitz was a member of the Harvard Lampoon and an initial member of the indie-pop band Chester French with Chazelle while in school.
