Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE born 31 August 1945, better known as Van Morrison, is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a seven-decade music career. He has received two Grammy Awards.

As a teenager in the late 1950s, he played guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and saxophone for many Irish showbands, playing popular music of the day.

Morrison, nicknamed “Van the Man” by his admirers, rose to notoriety in the mid-1960s as the main vocalist of the Northern Irish R&B and rock band Them. He recorded the garage band classic “Gloria” with Them.

Although not much is known about Violet Stitt Morrison, Van’s mother but it was noted that she died on May 31, 2016, at the Richmond Private Nursing Home in Holywood, Northern Ireland, at the age of 94.

Her funeral was conducted in St Donard’s Parish Church in east Belfast, where Van paid tribute to his mother with three songs. Van’s parents were married on Christmas Day 194 at St Donard’s Church.

Violet was a talented singer in her own right.  Recordings of her songs were played during the service, which was for close friends and family only. The service was a simple one and there were few mourners from the music industry.
