Celia Cruz was a naturalized Cuban-American singer who became one of the most successful Latin musicians of the 20th century. She was born on October 21, 1925, and passed away on July 16, 2003. During the 1950s, Cruz earned the nickname “La Guarachera de Cuba” for her work as a guaracha singer in Cuba, which led to her rise to stardom.
Cruz began her professional career in her home country of Cuba, where she achieved notoriety as a vocalist with the well-known musical group Sonora Matancera. This musical collaboration lasted for a total of fifteen years (1950-1965).
