On October 21, 1925, Ulsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso, a naturalized American citizen and one of the most well-known Latin musicians of the 20th century, was born. Cuban native Ursula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso was born in the Santos Suárez neighbourhood of Havana. Simón Cruz worked as a train stoker, while her mother, Catalina Alfonso Ramos, cared for a big family while staying at home.
There were a total of fourteen children living in the house, including her three siblings Dolores, Gladys, and Bárbaro, as well as cousins. One of the older children, Celia, would lull the smaller children to sleep by singing to them.
Cruz underwent surgery in August and September 2002 for breast cancer. Cruz fell in November of the same year while doing a performance in Mexico. She was diagnosed with glioma, a serious kind of brain cancer, in December and had surgery. Cruz passed suddenly on July 16, 2003, in the late afternoon at her home in Fort Lee, New Jersey. She had a 77-year-old age.
