The rock band the Associates, which Alan Rankine and Billy Mackenzie co-founded in the late 1970s, is most known for using him as their keyboardist and guitarist.

Alan Rankine (17 May 1958–1 January 2023) was a Scottish musician and record producer.

Growing up in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Rankine began his career with the cabaret troupe Caspian, which eventually changed its name to the Associates. The Affectionate Punch (1980), Fourth Drawer Down (1981), and Sulk are three albums they co-wrote (1982). In 1982, Rankine left the band just before the Sulk tour was about to begin.

Rankine developed himself as a producer, working with musicians including Paul Haig, Cocteau Twins, and The Pale Fountains, while Mackenzie continued with other collaborators. In 1986, he joined the Belgian record company Les Disques du Crépuscule and started a solo career. He released three solo albums: The Big Picture Sucks (1986), She Loves Me Not (1987), and The World Begins to Look Her Age (1986). (1989).

Rankine’s death was announced on 3 January 2023; he was aged 64. It was reported that Alan Rankine died peacefully at home and the cause of death is yet to be announced to the public.
