England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team member George Cohen passed away at the age of 83.

Cohen played at Fulham for the entirety of his playing career, appearing in 459 games, and was dubbed “the best full-back I ever played against” by George Best.

Cohen, a right-back on Alf Ramsey’s 1966 squad, earned his 37th and final cap a little more than a year later. Long after his retirement, he continued to work for Fulham as a matchday host. He participated in two FA Cup semifinal matches.

After a heated match at the 1966 World Cup, Cohen was notably stopped by Ramsey from exchanging shirts with an Argentina player. Cohen later claimed to have the photo hanging in his house.

He was the first member of the team to sell his championship medal, which Fulham had paid £80,000 for in 1998.

One of the first to pay respects was Geoff Hurst, who notched a hat-trick in that historic victory in 1966. He wrote on Twitter: “Very sad to hear my friend and England teammate George Cohen has passed away.

How many World Cups did George Cohen win?

In 1966, George Cohen won one world cup. The only remaining members of the World Cup-winning team are Hurst and Bobby Charlton. Everyone always praised George for being such a nice man, without exception. My deepest sympathies are with George’s wife Daphne and family, as he will be sorely missed.
