According to his colleagues, Terry Hall, frontman of the Specials, one of the most significant British new-wave bands of the 1980s, passed away after a brief, unannounced illness. Age-wise, he was 63.

On March 19, 1959, Terence Edward Hall was born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. He was sexually abused when he was 12 years old, and as a result of this, he spent the rest of his life struggling with despair and addiction.

That’s bad it happened to me, but you can’t just let it wreck your life, he said matter-of-factly in a 2019 interview for comedian Richard Herring’s “Leicester Square Theatre” podcast. He was diagnosed with manic depression after attempting suicide in 2004.

Hall stopped going to school when he was fifteen years old. In the late ’70s, he swiftly became a staple of the Coventry music scene and, at the age of 18, joined the Specials (then known as the Coventry Automatics).

The Specials were at the forefront of Britain’s ska revival in 1979 after releasing their self-titled debut album on their own 2-Tone label and receiving support from the Clash’s Joe Strummer and BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel.

The Specials were also at the forefront of the Beat, the Selecter, and Madness at the same time.
