Sir Sydney Samuelson, who passed away at the age of 97, was a key figure in the British film industry for more than 50 years.
He started as a cameraman and eventually climbed to become the country’s first Film Commissioner in 1991.
It was his responsibility as the director of the Film Commission to entice production from outside the UK, particularly from the United States, to sites in Britain. In his own words, his job was to “search out films that have been approved for European filming and convince the firm to substitute “For shooting in the United Kingdom”.”
Samuelson was the first to admit that it was impossible to evaluate the success of his order because it was impossible to foresee which foreign-financed movies may have first been made here.
He could, however, mention other big productions that he and his small staff had helped with by “oiling wheels, cutting tape, and unlocking doors,” particularly in locating suitable locations and technical staff. In addition, he was successful in persuading nine ministers to continue supporting the Commission.
