George Raymond Stevenson was born on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, as the second of three sons to Irish parents. His father was a pilot for the Royal Air Force. He moved to England with his family when he was eight years old, first to the Newcastle upon Tyne neighborhood of Lemington and then to Seaton Delaval. He graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School when he was 29 years old.
Stevenson’s first acting role was as a gigolo hired by Helena Bonham Carter’s character to help her lose her virginity in the 1998 film The Theory of Flight. Before graduating from the London Film School in 2002, he appeared in the short film No Man’s Land, which was directed and acted by actor/director Edward Hicks. Stevenson played an experienced private who is compelled to assist an inexperienced officer (David Birkin) back to safety in the 12-minute movie, which takes place during the Battle of Ypres. They both end up trapped and alone in “No Man’s Land.” As Dagonet, a knight of the round table who gives his life to save his comrades, he played the role in the 2004 film King Arthur.
