The oldest of two daughters born to musician Shelly Loraine Kearns and United States Army soldier Fausto Xavier Aguilera, Christina Mara Aguilera was born in Staten Island, New York City, on December 18, 1980. Her mother is of German, Irish, Welsh, and Dutch ancestry, and her father was born in Ecuador.
Due to his military service, the family relocated frequently, living in places like New Jersey, Texas, New York, and Japan. He was allegedly abusive both physically and emotionally, according to Aguilera. As a child, she was drawn to soul and blues records purchased by her grandmother and would practice singing, earning her the nickname “the little girl with the big voice” in her neighborhood. Aguilera wanted to be a singer since she was eight years old, when she won her first talent show with a rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” She was eliminated from the competition show Star Search at the age of ten after performing “A Sunday Kind of Love.”
She sang it again on KDKA-Wake TV’s Up with Larry Richert. Aguilera sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Pittsburgh Penguins hockey, Pittsburgh Steelers football, and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball games as a child, as well as the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals. She attended Rochester Area School District in Rochester, Marshall Middle School near Wexford, and North Allegheny Intermediate High School for a short time before being homeschooled to avoid bullying.
Aguilera auditioned for a role on the Disney Channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club in 1991, but she was too young. She joined the television show two years later, and she performed musical numbers and sketch comedy until it was canceled in 1994. Ryan Gosling, Keri Russell, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake were among the other cast members. Following the conclusion of the show, Aguilera relocated to Japan and recorded her first song, “All I Wanna Do,” a duet with Japanese singer Keizo Nakanishi. Aguilera returned to the United States in 1998 to look for a recording contract. She approached RCA Records, who advised her to contact Walt Disney Records instead due to financial difficulties. She submitted her cover of Whitney Houston’s “Run to You” to Disney in the hopes of being chosen to record the theme song “Reflection” for their animated film Mulan (1998). Aguilera was eventually chosen to perform “Reflection,” which was released in June 1998 and peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
