Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee to parents Mayme Edna (Revere), a teacher, and Morgan Porterfield Freeman, a barber.  Freeman’s first experience with the dramatic arts was on stage, where he had a number of appearances, one of which was in an all-African American production of the upbeat musical Hello, Dolly!

Freeman maintained his career on stage throughout the 1970s, earning nominations for the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, and the Clarence Derwent Award for his performance in The Mighty Gents in 1978. Freeman won the Drama Desk Award and the Clarence Derwent Award. Both his performance as the Shakespearean anti-hero Coriolanus at the New York Shakespeare Festival and his work in the play Mother Courage and Her Children earned him Obie Awards in 1980. These awards were presented to him that year.

Freeman was just 16 years old when he was diagnosed with pneumonia. When he was nine years old, he made his debut in the performing world by playing the lead part in a school play. After that, he received his high school education at Broad Street High School in Greenwood, Mississippi, a structure that is now occupied by Threadgill Elementary School.

After graduating from Los Angeles City College with a degree in theater arts, the young Freeman enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955 and worked as a technician for the next few years.
