The third child of Frederick Samuel Phillips and Cecelia Margaret (née Newlove), who both worked at Edmonton-based stove maker Glover and Main, Leslie Samuel Phillips was born on April 20, 1924, in Tottenham, London, England.
“Beyond the auditory reach of the Bow Bells but inside the broad footprint of cockneydom,” as Phillips put it, is where his street is located. Phillips attended Larkswood Primary School in Chingford, Essex, where the family had relocated in 1931.
