Robert Paul Gould III, who was born on December 6, 1982, plays placekicking for the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers. From 2005 until 2015, he was a member of the Chicago Bears, during which time he established himself as the team’s all-time leading scorer. The New England Patriots initially signed Gould as an undrafted free agent in 2005. At Penn State, he played collegiate football.

Cheryl and Robert Gould gave birth to Gould in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. His father, a three-time All-American soccer player who helped Lock Haven University win the Division II national championship in 1980, was selected in the first round of the 1980 soccer draft by the St. Louis Steamers.

Gould attended Penn State University and participated in football for the Nittany Lions. The head football coach at Penn State, Joe Paterno, invited him to try out as a freshman walk-on, despite the fact that he had first expressed interest in playing professional soccer. He urged his high school principal to send a letter of recommendation on his behalf to Paterno.
