At the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected him in the second round after he played college football for Mississippi State.

The majority of NFL draft experts and scouts projected Slay to be a second or third-round pick out of Mississippi State. He was invited to the NFL combine and went through all of the required combine and positional drills. Slay attended Mississippi State’s pro day on March 6, 2013, in front of team representatives and scouts from 30 NFL teams. Slay entered training camp as a co-starter with Rashean Mathis, but faced minor competition from Chris Houston. Slay and Rashean Mathis were named the starting cornerbacks for the 2014 season by head coach Jim Caldwell.

Slay started the season opener against the New York Giants, recording three solo tackles and three pass deflections in a 35-14 win. Slay had five combined tackles, a pass deflected, and his first career interception against the New York Jets in Week 4 on September 28, 2014. Slay made his first career interception off a pass intended for wide receiver Eric Decker by quarterback Geno Smith and returned it for a 40-yard gain in the fourth quarter.  In the Lions’ 34-17 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 13, he had a season-high eight combined tackles and three pass deflections. Slay had five combined tackles, two passes deflected, and an interception in the Lions’ Week 15 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on December 14, 2014.

In the second quarter, Slay intercepted a pass intended for wide receiver Greg Jennings by Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. In 2014, he started all 16 games and finished with a career-high 61 combined tackles (48 solos), 17 pass deflections, and two interceptions.
