Following the Queen’s death, Prime Minister Liz Truss led tributes to her, calling her “the rock on which modern Britain was founded.”
Ms Truss, who has just been in Number 10 for 48 hours, said in a Downing Street address: “Britain is the magnificent country it is now because of her.”
“She was the very essence of Britain,” she said, “and that spirit will remain.”
Ms Truss described the Queen’s death as “a profound blow to the nation and the globe” and the “end of the second Elizabethan period.”
She went on: “To have governed with such dignity and elegance for 70 years is an incredible accomplishment. Her service extended beyond most of our life memories.
“People in the United Kingdom and throughout the world adored and appreciated her in return.
“She has been a personal inspiration to me and to many Britons – her devotion to duty is an example to us all.”
The PM ended her speech with “God save the King”.
