Bernard Shaw, the award-winning broadcast television journalist who served as CNN’s lead anchor for two decades, died on Wednesday, the network’s president said in a statement.
He was 82.
Bernard Shaw was born in Chicago on May 22, 1940, to Edgar Shaw, a railroad worker and house painter, and Camilla (Murphy) Shaw, a housekeeper.
From March 30, 1974, until his death, Shaw was married to Linda Allston.
Linda was a creative person who produced and marketed fashion apparel under the name “Imagination By Pounds.”
Shaw and Linda had 2 children named Amar Edgar and Anil Louise.
When CNN started on June 1, 1980, Shaw was its first main anchor, rapidly creating a level of impeccable professionalism and quickly garnering the trust of millions of viewers.
Funeral services will be held for family members and invited visitors, with a public memorial ceremony planned later, Shaw’s family said in a statement to CNN.
“At this time, the Shaw family begs utmost privacy,” they stated.
