Ross Barkley, a former Chelsea midfielder, has been signed by Nice on a free transfer.

Barkley knew he had one year left on his Stamford Bridge contract going into the summer window, but he had little chance of being included in Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

Although he played for 45 minutes in a friendly match against Club America, that was his only appearance during preseason, and throughout the first few weeks of the season, Tuchel did not include him in any of his Premier League teams.

In an effort to jumpstart his career, Barkley, 28, accepted Chelsea’s offer of a mutual parting of ways at the end of August as a result of the club’s lack of real interest in signing him.

Barkley had been anticipated to move for a team in England or Scotland after leaving Chelsea with 12 goals and 11 assists from 100 appearances.

Prior to Nice’s match against Monaco on Sunday evening, the former England international was, however, formally introduced as a Nice player.
