Liz Truss, who defeated Rishi Sunak to become the leader of the Conservative Party, has been named as the UK’s new prime minister.
Ms. Truss received 81,326 votes from the Tory membership, whereas Mr. Sunak only received 60,399 votes.
After the competition started in July, Sir Graham Brady revealed the results today.
It indicates that once Boris Johnson resigns, Ms. Truss, who is presently the foreign secretary, will be asked to form a government.
Tomorrow, Ms. Truss, the third female prime minister of the UK after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, will fly to Balmoral for a meeting with the Queen and a transfer of power with Boris Johnson.
Later that evening, she will give a speech to the nation in which she will express her gratitude to Tory party supporters for their support and lay out her expectations for her term in office.
Ms. Truss will have a busy day because she must also decide who will be her cabinet ministers.
