European beam final:Ondine Achampong takes home silver medal

Ondine Achampong of Great Britain performed an almost faultless routine to take home silver in the women’s artistic gymnastics beam final at the Munich 2022 European Championships.

The 18-year-old improved her performance from qualification to win silver on beam with a score of 13.400. She was a member of the silver-medal winning quintet from the team final.

Achampong performed well during her acrobatic series but stumbled slightly during her two-and-a-half twisting back somersault dismount, which caused her to finish 0.066 seconds behind German gymnast Emma Malewski, who won the gold.

Carolann Heduit of France also scored a total of 13.400, but due to a lower execution score, she had to settle for third place, while local favorite Pauline Schaefer-Betz only managed a 13.200, which left her in fifth place.

When Schaefer-score Betz’s was announced, boos reverberated throughout the Munich arena. Achampong’s medal was Great Britain’s first of the day following the disruption of the floor and uneven bars finals by injury.

After having her second skill’s difficulty changed from a straight to a pike because Valentina Georgieva of Bulgaria and Asia D’Amato of Italy both required medical attention, Jessica Gadirova placed fifth for Great Britain on vault.
